Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel is considered the chief of God's army and is often depicted in art and literature as a soldier dressed in battle armor, carrying a sword. His name, Mi (who) Ke (as/like) El (deity) means 'who is like God' in Hebrew. The meaning, however, does not imply that St. Michael is 'like God'. In the tradition of the Talmud, his name is more of a question, as in 'Who is like God?' and the answer is, 'No one'. As such, St. Michael's name is interpreted as a symbol of humility.

St. Michael's feast day is September 29th.

In the past, devotees of St. Michael viewed him as a healer, then later as a patron of battles, wars and chivalry. He is considered by many as a defender of the faith and the saint whose favor you'd want if you were in trouble with evil forces. The prayer associated with him is said after the Holy Mass, followed by 3 Hail Marys and 1 Hail Holy Queen. It can also be invoked before praying the rosary or before starting a prayer meeting.

The prayer itself was composed by Pope Leo XIII. The prayer that follows includes the prayer recommended to be said after the Mass.
